Yes. I was a teenager, and Watergate was the top news story for months and months. Finally, that first week in August it was crystal clear that Nixon would go. I remember watching the resignation speech on Thursday night - I bet I could recite chunks of it from memory - and everyone saying how historic it was. And Ford was sworn in the next day.

I remember the pardon, the fall of Saigon, the Mayaguez incident, the two assassination attempts, WIN buttons, the entire 1976 election campaign, and Chevy Chase making fun of Ford on Saturday Night live.

It was a long time ago, but the memories are pretty fresh!

Yes I do. Everyone was talking about the fact he wasn't an elected president. Had been appointed to be VP after Agnew resigned and took over when Nixon resigned. I remember watching the watergate hearings live on tv and the uproar when Ford pardoned Nixon.

Yeah nobody ever explained how he could side-step the normal protocol going from congressman past the speaker of the house to V.P. then on to President? then pardon Nixon with-in 40 days of his resignation all without any election process! Then publicly state he never wanted to be President! The public was alarmed & mistrusted government in general as they currently do now by majority yet they stood idlely by! That was a mistake then as it is now NOT to end representative government as we know it!

Yes. It was hard for me to understand why Nixon was resigning -- I was only six.

Ford did a hell of a good job for someone that we never voted for!

Yep. It was sort of Agnew left, Ford was there to pardon Nixon. I really liked him. I never understood that because he fell once he was known as a klutz when he was our most athletic president.

Yes.

People were relieved that Watergate was over. The economy was in trouble, the middle east was at war (what else is new?), and all three (yes, THREE) TV channels were filled up with nothing but Watergate news, Watergate hearings, etc.

In fact, it is my contention that Nixon was forced from office because people got tired of their TV shows being preempted by Watergate hearings.
