I am a little confused by the termnaology being used here, sorry :-).
What you have described can mean two separate things to me as a long time mechanic.
1) you poured diesel fuel (often referred to as diesel oil in america since it is a distillate, like heating oil) into your crankcase. If this is the situation you need to drain and replace with the correct weight. If the engine has not been cranked everything should be fine.
2) You used a special oil designed for diesel engines and poured it into your engine. This could be trickier than one might realize although most of the time it causes no issues. Be certain that the weight of the oil meets your cars specifications. Most people do not realize the importance of oil weight in lubricating their engines. The clearnace in bearings and seals are critical to engine life and oils are spec'd to meet the tolerances. If the weght is acceptable there is nothing that would be added to the diesel oil that would negatively impact your car.

The difference between petrol and diesel oils is that the latter contain higher levels of detergents and dispersants to help deal with the soot diesels produce.
I normally use diesel engine oil in my petrol engine.
The down side to using diesel engine oils in high mileage petrol engines is that it cleans the engine so well it strips the carbon off the rings and can give you a smoky engine.
Many oils these days are for use in either petrol or diesel, the important thing is to make sure that the viscosity is right.

i agree that you should be fine. diesel or gas oil is basicly the same, and will not hurt the engine. From what others have said about the wait i totally disagree. you can run alomst anykind of oil in your engine and it wont hurt it. 10 40 should be fine, but so would stright 40. It will just slow the performance. It also depends on how old the car is. Generally as the car ages you will need as heavier wieght oil. 10 wieght is extrememly viscous and will get through any small cracks, etc. in your gaskets. then the heavier wieght oil will not get through but will slow down the engine. all oils will lubricate, the important thing is to have it full. remember to top of the tcase diffs and tranny, do the tcase first then tranny.

If the wrong engine oil is used it won't damage the engine. However to get the best performance from your engine and the best results in terms of fuel savings, reduced wear and tear and value for money, you should select an oil which is right for your car.
You can either top up to the maximum level with the correct oil or you can change the oil completely. Rest assured you haven't damaged the engine.

Never heard of diesel oil. Vehicles that burn diesel have different requirements than vehicles that burn petrol. However they are very close. Most oils will satisfy both.If in fact the diesel oil may be slightly better. I just have never seen oil for diesels be a separate issue.

If you haven't started it yet then drain and put the correct oil in, I am sure it will be okay but i am not a mechanic, So many cars run with little oil in and are okay. I am sure the little bit that didn't drain will not bugger engine up! Wally

All you will get is a very clean engine . the only differance between the oils is that desiel oils have a deturgent in them to keep the engine clean because desiel fuel is explosive. as you have a petrol engine you do not have that worry
