it reflects the cost of living in that area. for example it is well known that the cost of living in london is more expensive than the rest of the counrty so therefore you may get a london weighting for working in that area.

For example, in a large company if it has identical jobs in Glasgow and London and pays the same salary, the London cost must be 'upped' to reflect the higher cost of travel, rents, etc. So the employee will receive a 'weighting allowance' which is an additional sum. Technically, however, the salary paid for the job remains the same so you could be transferred easily but if you went to a lower=-cost area you would lose or receive a diminished weighting payment.

You get extra salary if you work in certain areas - London is the most usual - because housing in particular is more expensive there
