I house a hampster with 2 dogs and a snake, we never had any problems, one of the puppies actually plays with him (not with her teeth either!) Cats can climb better though, so I would be careful... but as long as you don't let the cat in your room he should be fine.
Side note: hampsters make alot of noise at night on their wheels, so think about it before you put him in your room for good =)

Several years ago I had an hamster and one or two cats that stayed in the house. I had the plastic cage for the hamster which didn't have any big openings on the cage except for small holes as well as some tunnels the hamster could walk through. The only time my cat would get around the hamster was when I put the hamster in the ball that allows them to walk around the room without them being in the open. The cat hardly ever did anything to the hamster except, from time to time, play with the ball the hamster was walking in. I usually would keep an eye on the hamster while it was walking and the cage was on a table out of reach of the cat. Although the cat could have jumped onto the table, the cat never did get onto the table and bother the hamster while it was in the cage. It should be safe for you to have the hamster, especially since you are going to keep the hamster in your room and keep the door shut.

Don't listen to everyone else. I have a 2 hamsters and 3 guinea pigs and 3 cats. All my cats have never tried to go after my hamsters and guinea pigs, they all just stare at them. What you want to remember is that if you cats threaten it by hissing at it or meowing at it or trying to eat it, it might die from a heart attack or something. Just keep a close eye on it and your cats. Make sure you keep it in a REALLY safe spot where the cats can't get it, and make sure that if it gets out of it's cage when you're not home, that it can't chew on any wires and kill itself or it can't get out of your room! KEEP THE DOOR SHUT AT ALL TIMES! Another thing is if you aren't home, like I said, they make these plastic things you can put over the wires so they are unchewable and also, make sure if your door has a hole on the bottom(you know what I mean, right?) make sure you plug it up so your hamster can't get out!

It depends. I used to have 2 gerbils and a cat. And the cat would let them run around and he'd never bother them - even if they were right next to him. I think it's because he knew that they were part of our family. He would even let my budgie fly around in the same room. It's probably very rare to have a cat who is this well behaved though.
As you are planning on keeping the hamster in your bedroom away from the cats, I'd say it's perfectly safe. Just make sure you keep the door closed at all times. :-)

I had a hamster many years ago and had cats too. I had to put the hamster up in another room at night so the cats didnt get to it and we had to watch them when they got a bit close to the hamster cage.

As long as you keep the hamster in the cage and don't let the cats in the room. I must warn you, though- hamsters tend to smell if you don't clean their cage regularly, so you may not want them in your bedroom. Also, they are nocturnal animals so they may keep you up at night running on their wheels.

I would think you would have the hamster in a cage since you wouldn't want hamster droppings all over your room. Unless you have oober intelligent cats I'm pretty sure they can't open a cage door.

i have 4 male cats, one mouse, one guinea pig and 4 hermits. The cats just watch in excitement. Although its been awhile now since we've had all these pets, and its harmony. Just house the hampster properly, and make sure the lid is one that cannot come off. I have a fake plastic lizard on my mouse cage, never had a problem.
