I got him yesterday and he is always hiding in the slabs of rocks. I made them into caves so he could hide because in the books they said they will come out more if they feel like they ae in a safe place. He is about five inches, and he also doesn't eat his food. It is hikari baby oscar food floating pelets. Please help all you oscar owners out there! Is this normal behavior?!

he is the only fish in the tank and i have a lot of slabs of rock in the tank, larger natural gravel, and a backround of rocks that i thought might make him more comfortable.

What size tank do you have for this oscar?
I have a 7inch oscar, i love him. They have great personalities and are a lot of fun to watch.

You should ask the person you got him from what he is used to eating.

Most big oscars are fed feeder fish which are good for them because they have to chase them which gives them exercise. He might only be used to chasing with.

I would go to the store and buy some Toughies. Theyre pinkish colored little feeder fish but not as small as the guppie feeders. The guppies are too small and can be very hard for your oscar to catch. That should perk him up and get him motivated. Also, make sure your water is warm. We have our oscars water at 78 degrees and he is happy in it. If the water is too cold it could make him very lethargic.

You should also check for common diseases like holes in the head (it really looks like hole in his head - dont confuse the sensor pits for holes though, the disease is actually big holes) or ich (small while spots all ober the body) If none of these are present, continue with the live fish feeding and again, make sure the water temp is warm enough.

Don't be alarmed if after you oscar has a full belly of fish or pellets if he sits or lays on the bottom of the tank. He might look sick or dying but he's really just content with the giant meal he ate. These fish are like old men, they eat, sleep, and make a mess.

No Oscar is a fierce fish but like all fish he can become timid due to enviroment.
If you only have 1 fish in the tank, than it ok.
If you have fish bigger than him in the tank, this might be the reason,
Or the place where you get him, he is afraid of the enviroment and carry the behaviour to your tank.
Make sure he is the only biggest fish in the tank and none other fish more aggresive than him(angel fish, parrot fish even discus are all agrresive fish).
Cover the tank about 75% leaving one of the side expose and monitor if he eat.
Gradually when he eat more, you can try giving him shrimp/frog and train him to be more aggresive.
Once he reach that stage you can remove the cover.

If he don't eat floating pallet after a week, give him red worm and turn off your filter while feeding.

How big is his tank? A 5" oscar will require a 55 gallon tank to be comfortable.

However most fish will be skittish when they are first moved into a tank. One thing that can help is to keep the lights low and don't have much movement around the tank for the first couple of days.
