"Milk production can be artificially and intentionally induced in the absence of any pregnancy in the woman. This is called induced lactation, while a woman who has lactated before and re-starts is said to relactate. This can be done by regularly sucking on the nipples (several times a day), massaging/squeezing the female breasts or with additional help from temporary use of milk-inducing drugs, such as the Dopamine antagonist domperidone In principle, and with considerable patience and perseverance, it is possible to induce lactation by sucking on the nipples alone. It is not necessary that the woman have ever been pregnant, and she can be well in her post-menopausal period. Once established, lactation adjusts to demand. As long as there is regular breast stimulation, lactation is possible."

Yes it is possible just like it is possible for a man to produce breast milk. A man is set up the same way as a woman. What cause breast milk to come in is a hormone called prolactin. This hormone is normally produced after you give birth. However it is possible for both men and women to produce this without ever being pregnant. This is very very rare but has happened normally in a situation where there was extreme stress (usually death) and an infant that wont make it if there is no breast milk. Google it and you will be surprised on what you find.

A women can produce breast milk when on hormones. Some adopting mothers of newborns actually take the hormones to beable to breast feed like a birthing mother would (it's supposed to create a greater bond). I read it in the adopting parents magazine at the doctors office.

The production of breast milk is a result of hormones being released into a woman's system. Most of the time, birth triggers the release of these hormones. However the anthoplolgist, Margret Mead, found that orphaned infants who were given to women without children of their own, within a short time, were able to suckle their newly adopted children. The human body is capable of amazing things. It is a matter of mind over matter.

Some sicknesses, hormone imbalances, miscarriage...

Typically though, pregnancy is the main cause.
