Depends on your TV.
Most new HDTVs now include a cable tuner to receive unscrambled channels (including HD channels, such as CBS, ABC, etc.)
Some TVs even have a cable card slot. You get the card from your cable company and then you can see even premium channels.
So, check your TV's features. If you just need basic cable, you may be able to skip the box.
If you get a set-top box, get one with built-in PVR.

To get the full array of digital channels (i.e. those above 100, etc.), you will want to get the box. Also, you will probably have On-Demand (not just In-Demand) after you get that box too... a major plus! If you don't have On-Demand in your area, just be patient... it is something that I really like in my household! Get the box and enjoy... or buy an HDTV and get the HD box!
