What will you remember most about him? I will remember his efforts and hard work as a humanitarian.

What I'll remember most about him was that he was probably the greatest gentleman the modern presidency has ever had. He was a man who rose above partisan bickering, and always treated people with kindness and unfailing civility.

He was unfailingly generous with Ronald Reagan, even though Reagan challenged him in the 1976 primaries; and he was always gracious to Jimmy Carter who beat him in the 1976 general election.

He spent many years in Congress, eventually making his way to the Minority Leadership; and in all of his years there, made no enemies, and legions of lifelong friends on both sides of the aisle. This was why President Nixon put Gerald Ford's name before Congress to replace Spiro Agnew as Vice President. Nixon knew that anyone he chose was certain to be grilled and fried by Congress. But he knew that the one Republican who could breeze through Congress was Gerald Ford -- because first and last -- Mr. Ford was a gentleman. And THAT's what I'll always remember about him.

Gerald Ford took over for Nixon in 1974.
He made such a positive impression on
voters, that he almost beat out Jimmy
Carter in 1976.
And that was a true example of swimming
against the tide.
Basically, Carter won because the nation
was ready for change. Ironically, we are at
that point again in the Washington merry-go-
round. Whoever the Democrats run will
probably get elected.

I will remember that he seemed like a "regular" guy. You could imagine yourself going bowling or talking sports with Gerald Ford, unlike most other presidents.

i believe undesirable for Ford's pals and kin who certainly enjoyed him deeply. despite the fact that, i'm a Viet Nam era vet and have absolute, total contempt for each and each between the creeps who ran off to cover in Canada or Sweden. Gerald Ford pardoned them, and for that I even tend to place him interior a similar type as Jane Fonda and her ilk.

He was a good man in difficult times. The country was torn apart by Watergate, and he tried to heal it by pardoning Nixon, though I'm not sure how successful that was--many of us saw it as a sort of "payback" for being chosen as Vice-President. We were also in the middle of double-digit inflation, and his "Whip Inflation Now (WIN)" buttons became a joke. Even though he was a great athlete, he just couldn't stop hitting spectators when he played golf, so that became a joke, too. I don't think he was given as much credit as he deserved, because of the circumstances.

I will remember that he had to deal with the "Nixon leftovers" and he wasn't really liked, but he wasn't hated either. He was just "thrown" into this and had to do the best he could.

I sure remember that he pardoned nixon, the worst criminal this country had at that time. That set a terrible precedent that other criminals - reagan, clinton, and the bushes - will get away with their crimes as well.
