In addition, the Checkpoint software can run on a mixture of platforms -- some are quite generic (like Windows or Solaris), and some have some characteristics of an appliance (Nokia IPSO or SecurePlatform). The Checkpoint SecurePlatform product is a hardened Linux OS that runs on fairly generic hardware.
The Checkpoint products are usually managed with a graphical-user-interface (GUI). The GUI can be used to work with a Checkpoint management server. The actual firewall policy changes are pushed from the management server to the actual firewalls. This lets you use a single server to manage multiple firewalls.

To add to the confusion, earlier Cisco PIXen were monolithic devices, with only one instance of the firewall running on an individual device. The newer Cisco ASA devices can run multiple firewall instances
You may also encounter Cisco firewall service modules (FWSM), which is a PIX-like blade that can be installed in a Cisco Catalyst 6000 chassis. It's still only a single firewall instance, but you can integrate the firewall function in the switching and routing functions of the Catalyst.
Like most Cisco products, there is a rudimentary GUI (Pix Device Manager, I believe is the product), but most of the nuts and bolts configuration is done directly on the device through a command line interface.

Different manufacturers, simliar capabilities.

The PIX is a hardware device. Checkpoint is software that you install on a server class machine to make it a dedicated firewall appliance. That's the principal difference.
