Yes, you can get Adobe Acrobat for that purpose. It costs a pretty penny.
I think there are some free editors as well. You might try searching on http://www.sourceforge.net.
I think you can also use OpenOffice for that. http://www.openoffice.org

Yes you can edit an .pdf file in adobe reader 6 onwards by saving the opened document as an .rtf file

You can't edit a PDF unless you have the full Adobe package, about $500.

Yes, there is a software which converts the pdf file into word file.
the software is Abbyyfinereader.
we can download the trail version of this software from the downloads.com or you search through google you probably got the website name of abbyyfinereader

if the document is protected you cannot edit it, PDF is a very secure format, anyway if you want to convert the PDF to another format, lets say for example Word, there is a free software (Chief-Win PDF Converter PE) you can download it from c-net, or zd net , www.downloads.com
