This varies for each woman. I had a lot of pain with this, but they used more dye than planned which can cause cramping. I had to go home afterward and lie down and rest. Other women I talked to had a lot of pain also. I think the test was worth it though because we know that my test was normal and we don't have to worry about that.

I had this test done yesterday. My doctor had prescribed an antibiotic to begin the night before the test. The morning of, I again took the antibiotic and also took 800 mg. of Advil one hour before the test. The antibiotic was taken again last night and this morning to prevent infection.
For the actual test, the doctor inserted a speculum and then clamped my cervix to keep it open. The clamp felt like a constant pinch. A catheter was used to insert the dye. When the dye was inserted, it was very uncomfortable...very strong cramps. I did not need to move during the test, but my uterus was inverted and the doctor needed to move it to take a good x-ray. This was very painful. Afterward, had some spotting so be sure to bring a pad. I went to work after the test, but I would recommend taking the day off as I felt very sore all day. Today I am still experiencing pressure and spotting though it is a bit better than yesterday. Advil every few hours has been helping.

A clamp will be use to 'open up' then the dye will be insert inside the uterus. During this process, slight discomfort may be experience The major discomfort occur during the actual checkup when u need to turn ur body. Feels like mentrual cramp but a lot more worst. When pain become increase, do not be alarmed. Calm down and breath normally. The pain will be worst if you re too tense. Try to keep ur 'muscle' as relax as possible juz like putting on a tampon. The pain will go away after the checkup. After tat, u may experience some bleeding so prepare to bring some panty-liner with you.

The pain depends on your tolerance for it.
I had one in June 05 and it was very painful for me, even though I had no blockage or scarring. (I was told it would only hurt if you had that).
Afterwards I was fine. I bled very lightly and spotted for 2 days afterwards. My dr gave me antibiotics to start taking 2 days prior to getting the HSG done to prevent any infections...and he gave me some Motrine to take an hour prior to having it done, and then again afterwards.
I know many women who had it done who said a pap smear was more uncomfortable than the test, and others who said childbirth has nothing on an HSG....it varies for everyone.
Good luck!!

I had one a few months ago, it was uncomfortable during, they stick a catheter inside and insert dye into you and they check for spillage ( which you are supposed to have) its a little uncomfortable..... not painful but definitely not pleasant. And immediately after I was alright, it was a few hours after wards before the the cramps hit.. those were very bad for me..
Most have mild cramping after, some worse than others.. I was the worst side of it.
I suggest taking some Tylenol or Motrin before hand, and a few hours after its done.
Good luck
