You don't say what brand it is but basically you turn on wireless and windows xp will automatically locate wireless connections. You click on the icon in the system tray, near the clock, and pick which one you want to connect to.

Keep in mind in the US it is a crime to access someone else's connection without their permission.

if your neighbors system is not locked(does not require a password to connect) then your computer should be able to connect to it.
1. if you have a little computer icon with sound wave looking things coming from it at the bottom right corner of you screen(if not then see step 3), then right click on it and go to "view available wireless connections"(you may or may not have to flip a switch on your computers case to turn on your wireless depending on the brand)
2. your computer will search for available networks and give you a list of what is available. any network that does not have a lock next to it, is fair game for you. just click on the network and click "connect"
3. if you dont have the said icon, then go to my computer and to my network places. on the left side of the window you should see an option to view wireless networks. click on this and then go back to step one.
4. if your neighbors network is locked(and he is going to let you use it) then the process is a little bit more difficult. you will need his password and then you can just go into the network connections wizard and it will guide you through the process.

ps. you can find an unsecure connection in almost any apartment complex these days. this comes in handy when you are on the road. just pull into the parking lot and connect. lots of hotels have this too.
good luck

Dude - you shouldn't be connecting to your neighbor's wifi.

However, if his is unsecured - you should be able to see it when you crank that laptop up. Look down on the screen by the clock - if you can see the computer monitor and waves coming out - you have connectivity - double click on the little monitor - choose connect to the connection it shows - if it is unsecured - you are in.

I wouldnt reccomend connecting to your neighbous network unless you have permission off them! they may have lock on it anyway to stop people outside te household connecting to their network. To connect to a network you need to make sure that your wireless is turned on on the computer, usually by pressng Fn and the button with the wireless symbol on it, look in your laptop handbook. an icon will come up in the right hand corner and you will be able to link to connestions from there. remember to make sure your neighbours are ok with you using their internet connection.

Unfortunately, you will need to get your own wi-fi, but if you have a Starbucks neear you, pay to use their wi-fi periodically. If you are on good terms with your neighbour and they dont mind, nip round and ask for some information. However if your 'jumping on' its not advisable, as if you get caught, you leave yourself open to all sorts of questions....
