I started putting a little cereal in my daughters formula when she was a month an a half old. She was eating almost 8 oz every hour, and now that I have started giving her cereal she doesn't eat as much and her weight gain has slowed. If your doctor said it was okay then you have the green light to give him cereal. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise, you and your doctor are the only ones who know what is best for your son.

OK, actually the american association of pediatrics recommends starting food between four to six months. Some say 4 and others say 6 within the association, so to be safe they say talk to your own doctor. My six month olds docotr also recomened putting 2 TBL spoons in my sons formula to help it settle his stomach. He had a gasto reflux problem, and after we started giving him the rice cereal with the formula and sitting him up for a half hour after each meal,. he stopped vomiting like he was in the movie The xorcist. I cant tell you what to do, I even started my baby on jar food at like three months. My MD told me that he couldnt recommend it util at least four months, but If I htough the baby could eat it and wanted it, and tolerated it well that I could feed him. So I did, and my son is fine. Please do what feels right for you and your family. ( by the way, the book that I am qouting, when I say 4-6 months, is from similac, came with a care package, and its bascially a first year book, there are astericks all over the book explaining that the association is conflicted with different opinions on when to start food, so they say between 4-6 months) I hoep that maybe I was able to help you a little nit. Good Luck

The right answer to this depends on your situation that I don't know about. My answer is assuming that the doctor is telling you this info because you would like your baby to sleep better. If it is because of reflux, that's a whole different ballgame.
As a mom of 4, and a postpartum doula, I would suggest finding a new pediatrician. This doctor is putting your child's health at risk - studies have shown that babies fed foods other than breastmilk or formula before 4 months have a much higher chance of developing food allergies later in life. It also starts many children on a life of overeating, since what you're essentially doing is pumping them full of food when they don't need it. And for a young baby, such as 8 weeks old, they may not yet fully understand the suck, swallow method of eating a thicker substance, causing them to aspirate some food into their lungs. As I mentioned before - a dangerous practice!!! It is your right to do research for your child's health, and not just take the doctor's word for it. If it feels like the wrong thing to do, deep down in your heart, than it probably is. Great job for looking for more information about this matter and not just following the doctor's advice blindly!!!! Now start looking for a new pediatrician that you can trust a bit more - if your child was deathly ill, and this doctor you are using now was in charge of your baby's care, would you trust him with the life of your child?
Do what feels right to you - your baby's health, well being, and happiness are in your hands.

I know that some medical/professional advice is what you are looking for, and all of that will vary. YOU are Mommy, and sometimes you just have to go with your instincts and do what YOU feel is "the right thing". On a personal note, I started my first child on cereal at 3 months, spoon fed, 2nd child at 2.5 months, spoon fed, and my now 4.5 month old is NOT on cereal yet, she's quite content with her formula still. Good luck!

It's fine! My son had has cereal in his bottle since he was three months old. LOTS of people tell you that you should never put cereal in their bottle. But these people are all full of crap! It's perfectly fine. Just make sure to widen the hole in the nipple A LITTLE to allow the thicker fomula/cereal mix to get out of the bottle. And make sure to buy new nipples VERY often. Once you widen the hole it won't take long for the hole to widen more on it's own. When it get too big liquid will just spill everywhere and make a big mess.

Did the doctor put him on cereal at 8 weeks because he isn't gaining weight? I would get a second opinion since the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends not giving any baby food before 6 months.

I think it's all a matter of preference. If you feel comfortable giving cereal to your baby, I don't think it's going to hurt him. If your doctor recommends it, I think it's ok. I assume you want to do it because he's not sleeping well at night. There is a risk that giving cereal to your baby before his digestive system is equipped to handle it will cause problems later, but I know lots of people who have done it and their kids are fine.
Personally, I have not given cereal to my daughter yet because I don't feel it's necessary, but I'm also a supporter of doing what is right for you and your baby.

Is your baby a big baby? A little cereal in his formula wont hurt him. My mom gave my brother cereal at 10 days old because he was almost 10 pounds when he was born. try it! Your doctor wouldnt tell you to do it if it would hurt him.

If the baby has reflux or just doesn't seem to be satiated enough by formula a doctor will tell you to put a little cereal in the bottle. I had to do it with my children for reflux.

I fed all 3 of my children cereal in their formula, per my Doctors instuctions as well. They just werent getting full enough from just formula. It was a life savor as they finally slept thru the night with a full belly!!! (Just make sure to cut the hole in the nipple a little bigger.)
