The flag will remain at half staff from sunrise ( reville ) until Sunset ( retreat ) unless the flag is illuminated ( meaning there is light faced upon the flag so all can see that a flag is flying. If it is not illuminated, nor is it an " alls - weathers " flag, then only fly it during sunrise and sunset. This will be repeated until the day he is Buried, and then until the Presidents order to release half staff.

The flag should remain at half staff until the stain of the Bush junta washes out of it. Nixon wrapped himself in the flag, which denigrated it and Bush has been using it as a substitute for toilet paper.

Half-masting a flag is probably the last symbolic gesture of what was once in some cultures a common way of showing grief.
In Navy rules, the half staffing/half masting starts at the time of the officers death until the time he is buried.

I haven't seen any flag at half staff yet. Too bad business and people don't care about this type of things anymore.
