I'd go buy a new one if i were you. They are easy to install. Especially if it's scratching CD's.

It might be dust in the drive thats making your CD scratch up like that. When one of my Dell(s) does that, I use a CD Cleaner and it works fine after that. When dust gunks up in the drive, it gets on the lens which makes it hard for the Disc to be read.

The lens is affected badly bcos of ur rough use
Clean ur CD-Rom with CD-Rom Cleaner available in the shop
it'll be a CD with some solution with it.
Use that solution and CD as directed to clean ur CD-ROM
and then try to use it
if its again giving troubles, then u have to definitely change it

Problems reading and writing CDs are common. In many cases, the problem cn be solved by checking the PC with free software, hardware modifications and cleaning the CD drive. I found the information at http://fixit.in/cdrdrive.html useful.

Could be how your machine is sitting, if not try testing a brand new cdr in there and burn at an average speed.. Keep accessing it and see if there is any damage.. Like the guy up there said you could always just buy another one, there cheap..
