Nowadays Spitalfields is rather dominated by Bangladeshi immigrants! Traditionally it was always the first port of call for migrants to Britain, notably French Hugenots in the 18th Century and then Jews in the 19th century. Hugenots set up weaving workshops, jews continued with small scale tailoring/dressmaking businesses (typically sweatshops). Some of this continues today, but Bangladeshi immigrants have set up numerous restaurants.
Trumans brewery used to be a major employer, but this closed in 1980's. There are numerous street markets in the area - they certainly dominate on Sundays.
So, purpose today: markets, curry/balti restaurants, trendy housing in original 18th century buildings - lived in by people who like things a bit 'edgy'.
