Born on 28 October 1944, Coluche, real name Michel Colucci, spent his childhood in Montrouge, failed dismally at school and started working life at the PTT. When sacked from that job he tried his hand at numerous others including café waiter, florist, greengrocer and factory worker before learning to play the guitar which enabled him to make his living doing cabaret in Paris. He was discovered by Romain Bouteille of the 'Café de la Gare' and, in the company of Patrick Dewaere and Josiane Balasko amongst others, he learnt how to act. He set up the charity 'Restos du coeur' and remains one of France's most popular comedians despite his tragic death in a motorbike accident in 1986.
