I have always had the problem of telling people what they want to hear vs. telling them what I truely feel and being more blunt. I know in some case you have to sugar coat things a little. What is the best thing to do or does it vary based on situation?

On this site you can loose ten points by being blunt and not sugar coating it. Other then that I like it because it cut through the chase.

Being honestly blunt is probably the best way but the others will see you as insensitive. Sugar coating it is like lying and you can get tangled up in lies. Just be honest and tell it like it is. I know when I am being sugar coated and don't value the opinions of these people. I would prefer to ask someone with an honest opinion, brutal or not.

It is never what you say but how you say it. If you want to sell something or be a diplomat, you have to learn how to motivate people to do what you want.

Your points might all be valid. But if everyone thinks you are a jerk you won't be respected. You might have the best advice in the world but it will be useless if no one will listen to it.

To begin, modify your body language. Always smile at people, be happy to see them and make some eye contact. Show some empathy.

If you must correct someone, try and put it between two compliments.

IE: Your friend didn't brush his teeth and his breath stinks. Joe you are great guy and I think you have a lot going for you. However, your breath is really ripe now and it is turning people off. I'm just letting you know because we are friends and I'm looking out for you.

The truth hurts....just remember that.....I am the kind of person who will tell you how things are and if they hurt your feelings them i am sorry but its the truth.....pros and cons are if you tell people how things are they will be getting the truth but might hurt feelings and if your always sugar coating things people will think your nice but wont ask you your opinion if they want the truth...somethings are based on the situation but might as well just keep tellings things how they are

The truth is always the best way to go, but sometimes you have to temper it with compassion in order to make your point without making yourself look like an a**.

the cons I can think of being blunt and telling the rough truth to people are:
you have to be able to run fast - so it is not suitable for fat or handicapped people.
You have to talk loud, from a safe distance - so it is not suitable for people with weak lungs or throat.
You have to be used to talk to yourself - so it is suitable for sociopaths or people who talk to themselves anyway (unless they are given their medicine)
otherwise I see no reason against being blunt.
