Organic chemistry is the name given to the chemistry of Carbon compounds, many of which have an organic source.
Because the Carbon atoms can hybridize into so many forms and still covalently bond to each other and to many other elements, the number of Organic compounds is vast.
The system of Nomenclature (naming of compounds) is complicated by the formation of multiple bonds, rings, hetero-cyclic and other molecules. A single molecular formula can often lead to a great number of different chemical compounds.
The various reactions are almost always due to the structure of the non-carbon atoms in the organic molecules. These also change the nature of the carbon-carbon bonds in terms of reactivity.
A good sense of visualization of the structure of the reacting molecules is very helpful. This is not as necessary in most other fields of chemistry (except Biochemistry, which is a branch of Organic).
One further complication is that many of the reactions studied are named for the chemist or group who first studied and published the reaction. The list of Named Reactions is long and difficult to memorize. Only a specialist in Organic chemistry would due so.

First Step : Go back to read what you have learn in General Chemistry . There are some basics and background that you still need to understand Organic Chemistry . These include [ Atom - Molecule - Ion , Chemical Bond , Covalent Bond , Coordinate Covalent Bond , Formal Charge , Electronegativity , Polar / Nonpolar Bonds , Hydrogen Bonding , Lewis Dot Structure / Symbol for Electron Pair and Covalent Compound , Hybridization , Resonance , Acid - Base , Enthalpy , Reaction Rate , Oxidation & Reduction , Chemical reaction , Balancing Chemical Equation , etc. ] If you already " forget " or " thrown away " all of these concepts , it will take a very ____l____ o____ n____ g ____ time to understand Organic Chemistry . Second Step : Find a good tutor -- ( The one that tell you not to remember / memory ; but to concentrate - understand - evaluate - dare to make a decision - and learn from the errors you have made ) [ Do not try to find me ; I am too old and I live very far away from you . ] Third Step : Do a lot of Exercises ( especially the ones with Solution Books ) Even with solution books , you may still have to ask your tutor to explain . ( or Bring the solution to this web and ask for explanations ) . Fourth Step : Come back to this Yahoo Answer >> Find some Resolved Questions >> Try to give your own answer ; if it is not correct >> look at the answers >> ( keep in mind that the best answers may not be the correct ones ) . Fifth Step : In this Yahoo Answer >> Find some Open Questions on Organic Chemistry >> Try to give your own answer ; Do not tell other people who you are >> Once your answers selected as Best Answers >> It means that you already gain experience and confidence in Chemistry . All these five steps can be finished within 1 year ( If you work alone ; but hard enough ) ; with a good assistance it can be effective within 1 semester .

Organic chemistry is nothing but chemistry of carbon compounds.Carbon has characteristic property called as catenation.Due to this it's compounds are large in number as compared to comps of other elements.Ofcourse it becomes important to treate this as a seperate branch.

Organic Chemistry is a seperate branch of chemistry because it deals with organic Compounds, which are found in living things and also bio-chemical reactions.

Due to the property of catenation, carbon readily forms chemical bonds with a large number of elements. The formation of carbon-carbon bonds are also possible, as a result of which there exists large number of carbon compounds. These compounds also have wide applications in various fields which makes organic chemistry a separate branch of chemistry.

actually, it is not like there is chemistry and organic chemisty....There is chemisty, then there are the five main branches: Organic, Inorganic, Analytical, Physical and Biochemisty. They are all separate branches because they are all so different. Analytical is the most employed chemistry, followed by organic. Organic is more studied in undergrad; however, it is such an important branch. There are also other types of chemisty like macromolecular and polymer.

organic chemistry or the chemistry of carbon is
extensive enough to be a separate subject on its own.carbon being present in all living organisms in a myriad of compounds that react differently.
and the methods of production of carbon compounds in industry.

Because it's such a vast subject because of the enormous number of compounds that even an elementary treatise on orgainic chemistry would fill a typical school book.
