restore overwritten file???

Question

I repaired my computer using recovery console. My pictures survived but I've yet to find any audio, video and Words files on my system.
When I try to open folders from before the recovery I get this message: c:\\documents and settings\xxxxx

Can an overwritten file be restored?

If no, how can I remove/erase the old data? The old files are taking up a lot of disk space.

run disk clean up
