In that era, most of the "money-lending" was done by Jews.
Shylock is presented as a money-hungry, greedy, heartless person.
This is not a representation of Jewish people, but of money-lenders, this one in particular.

Jewish people were ostracized because of their perceived treatment of Christ. Jews, in return, only had time for Christians
when it was for their benefit.
Quote:
SHYLOCK: "I will buy with you, sell with you, talk with you & so following, but I will not eat with you, drink with you nor pray with you".

At that time the jews were regarded in more orless the same way muslims are regarded now. They were a troublous community that created a burden on the Europeans and it remaind like this untill the whole problem was exported to the middle east and utilized for political reasons.
But the story itself is remarkable. very moving and masterfully written.Shylok wasn't meant as an example of jewish evil, but as an example of human greed and sly nature in general. It is verey similar to the works of many modern writers about mulsims or atheists, etc.
It is like writing a story a bout a horrible nazi soldier who tortured jews during the holocost. The story shouldn't be taken as an attack on the german race! but as an expression of the evil that man do in general. A german have no right to be offended by such story, and in the same way a jew shoiuldn't be offended by Merchant of venice.
