I am sorry to hear your story. Hope it will all be better soon.
Be careful with paying money up front, a lot of scams out there.
There is a web site for working abroad, I don't have the address (I will post it if I find it) but I am sure you can find it with some Internet search (jobs abroad, overseas work, etc), that has many jobs for native English speakers (to teach English), I think you could do that! Its not volunteer work, it pays (not huge money, but you can live).
Best of Luck!

Decide what skill it is that you have to offer. Is this something that an agency would host you to do over seas? Let me give you an example. An engineer or an architect will have no problem getting a position in the peace corps right out of college. However an English major may find themself on a 2 year waiting list (that is how it was in 1992 not sure for now). Even though you would be a volunteer, you still want a room, food and medical care for life. Correct? What guarantee do you have that a charity would care for you in your old age?
Consider moving to a very inexpensive part of the country. Consider renting a room or have a room mate.
Go to your department of labor and get career counseling. It is free.
Could you become an apartment manager? (you live in a unit for free and get a small salary, but you basicly would be babysitting all the tenants.)

There is no easy answer to this situation, sadly though, it sounds as if you are grasping at straws. And if against your atty advice , you settled, are you willing to follow any one else's advice (hopefully you'll get some sound advice)? Maybe your just not hearing what you want to hear, which is there is no easy way out of the hole you are in, including volunteering in another country. There is no guarantee you wouldn't be in as desperate a situation there as you are here.
If you can swallow your pride, move in with a family member or friend, (it sounds as if you can accomplish quite a lot). Get a job which pays 6.50 and hour, see if you can get reimbursed for child support and work steady until you are back on your feet. You could also go back to school, get funded and get a degree. It is entirely possible.
Just do not run away from the problem.
You seem literate enough... You can do this.

First go to child support in your area & drag that SOB to court. If your state is like mine he pays all of back pay or gets time behind bars. This doesn't cost you anything they have attorneys that handle it for you.
Next check local papers for jobs as a assistant in the local school system. No degree needed. You supervise recess & help with the handicapped children. Starting pay here is 8 - 10 hr.
Paying for somebody to do paper work when you are a volunteer is just beyond realistic. Many churches are looking for volunteers to do missionary work in foreign countries.

I HEARD THIS SONG, IN A PRECISE MOMENT, ....
song by:Josh Groban
You Are Loved (don't Give Up)
Don't give up
It's just the weight of the world
When you're heart's heavy
I...I will lift it for you
Don't give up
Because you want to be heard
If silence keeps you
I...I will break it for you
Everybody wants to be understood
Well I can hear you
Everybody wants to be loved
Don't give up
Because you are loved
Don't give up
It's just the hurt that you hide
When you're lost inside
I...I will be there to find you
Don't give up
Because you want to burn bright
If darkness blinds you
I...I will shine to guide you
Everybody wants to be understood
Well I can hear you
Everybody wants to be loved
Don't give up
Because you are loved
You are loved
Don't give up
It's just the weight of the world
Don't give up
Every one needs to be heard
You are loved
