I often see pictures of asian eating dog meat. I wonder why people eat dog meat. Dogs are intelligent and have been and still help humans in many many ways...They are used by the blinds, in search and rescue, detect seizures etc...they are loyal, affectionate and often die to save their masters. There are numerous reports of how dogs improve our life...Eating dogs, to me, is the ultimate trahison and show of lack of respect of life. Why not eat something else?

Dogs are seen as a companion animal. They live indoors and share many of the same privileges as their owners. They protect us, keep us warm, provide an ear when no one else will and love us unconditionally. Few other animals will do that. Hindus view dogs as scum and cows as holy (if memory serves); most Americans see dogs as part of the family and cows as food. Any animal can be a pet, but dogs are more popular. Also, in many countries dogs are consumed because they are plentiful. They run wild through the streets because the population is not kept in check. Dogs run wild in the states too, but most of us find more appetizing things to consume rather than something that may well have been a valued family member at one time. Deer is good, and plentiful. I hunt and fish, not because I enjoy killing things, but because my family might starve if I don't. Dog meat, from what I hear, is bland and tough. But when you're starving quality doesn't matter.

It began out of necessity I am sure. But became part of the culture. In China after communism came many dog breeds were nearly wiped out, why? because the people needed to eat.

Just as many American Indians ate dog meat to survive. The pioneers were shocked by this behavior. But we need only remind ourselves of Donner Pass and realize people will eat what they can when they must need to survive.

We should not judge other cultures based upon our own.

Protein. Plus, cultures vary as to what they consider food. In mine, we're fans of wild game more than domestic meat, but things have changed because of a cultural shift. Wild food is now considered a delicacy rather than an everyday thing. People in France and Spain eat snails, which I've had and I like, but a traditional Cherokee would smack you for eating them because you obviously MUST have problems to have to eat snails.

Culture affects how you view food.

Because it's part of their culture. In some places, it may be forbidden to eat pig but a treat to eat dog. And in America it's just the opposite. Just depends on the history of the people and how that animal came about to be a customary food choice. People do what it takes to stay alive.

And how do you know it's "dog meat"? Is there a dead dog carcass laying on the ground that they're all huddled around eating???
When you see pictures of Americans sitting around eating "meat", how do you know FOR SURE that they're eating beef or chicken or pork or lamb? How can you tell from a picture?
Before I go on... what's a "trahison"?
People eat whatever is available to them and whatever is culturally acceptable to them. Just because YOU think that dogs are wonderful creatures and should not be eaten, does not make it wrong for other cultures to eat them. People in India think that cows are sacred! But yet, I'll bet you enjoy a hamburger or steak!? So, who's right and who's wrong?

I have never seen the pictures you're talking about. And you see them OFTEN? You must have searched out those pictures. I think you went too far with the "lack of respect of life", 'cos "life" means steaks, porkchops and KFC too. I'm a dog lover, but I disagree with your culture & groups approach to dealing with this problem.

Can you say stereotype? Not every Asian country includes dog in their ethnic foods, but even if they did you don't need to express your contemptuous opinion of their cultures. You're obviously a PETA person lol, who really has no idea what you're talking about.

if you lived in India, this question would read:

why do people eat cows? cows are holy animals. they are allowed to walk among us, to freely eat the food we sell on the market. the most we ever do is nudge the cow to eat the food of the next vendor. how can people in america eat cows? why not eat something else?

really, it all depends on where you were raised and which values you learned.
