My pilot light is on in my boiler but when the heating is due to come on, nothing seems to happen. The radiators are cold but then will get warm randomly for about half an hour. I think that boiler isn't lighting but I'm not sure. Anybody have any ideas what the problem isd and how I may fix it?

Thanks

When the rads are warm feel the boiler , is it hot ? I mean hot not just warm. If so then the electrics on the boiler would at this stage appear to be OK. as is the controls. Now look at the pump using a largish screw driver as a stethoscope can you hear it running? if not, first is the pump hot? if not test for mains voltage at the pump terminals. 240 volts if yes replace the pump.
If the pump is hot then remove the screw in the centre of the pump and then using a small screw driver try spinning the shaft ( a small amount of water will leak from the shaft ). If the shaft won't turn then replace the pump.
If the pump is running then look at the diverter valve. If the valve has a leaver on the side then lock it in the mid position, do the radiators start to get hot and the boiler fire up ? If yes then replace the diverter valve motor (Only available on some valves) otherwise replace the head. If no leaver remove head and manually turn the shaft to an open position ( mid position)
If the boiler is still not firing up but both the pump and diverter is OK then test at the gas valve on the boiler for 240 volts If present then have the gas valve replaced. I say have it replaced as the regulations require it to be done by a CORGI reg. fitter and also it will require both a soundness test and the burner pressure setting up.
If no voltage present at the gas valve then it could be the thermostat or a thermal intermitant problem with (if its fan flued ) the pcb, fan or air pressure switch.

Hope this helps but if not
would require hands on to investigate further.

Make sure your programmer is set to bring the heating on, also check that your room thermostat is turned to at least 20*c
When the boiler is due to come on, look in the little observation window on the boiler to see if you have a high flame, if you do then your boiler is ok!, when you have a flame at your boiler, have someone watch it while you turn the room thermostat from high to low, if stat. is working then the flame should go out and then come back on again, this will test the opperation of the room stat.

Also while or if you have a high flame at the boiler do the same with the thermostat on the boiler, this will test the stat built into the boiler.

Turn your boiler on and look through the spy glass to see if the main burner lights up,. If it doesn't it means that the gas valve is not opening to let the gas through.
