In general, it would be a relationship that is fluid, changing, dynamic. Each of the parties are making choices that are constantly setting the relationship on a new course while butting up against the substance and structure by which they operate, thus changing and redefining that substance and structure by means of the struggle. Academically, Dialectics is the study of how various events impinge on the Absolute Spirit moving through time {GWF Hegel}; the dynamics of cause and effect. Certain triggers set off a chain of reactions, each impacting the other, causing inexplicable mutations but also in a spiralling progression.

it is what is produced by the friction between opposites. a dialectic is an argument that posits a thesis, an antithesis, and is resolved by a synthesis. some examples of modern dialectics within the sphere of public debate at the moment include good vs. evil, men vs. women, black vs. white, corporations vs. communities, industry vs. environment, Christianity vs. Islam, cats vs. dogs, whatever you want, really. The entire conflict in the middle east right now is clearly discernible as a result of dialectical tensions. What you need to keep in mind is that these oppositions are constructed. Apples and oranges are only compared and evaluated against each other because we put them in that position. The dialectic presupposes that there is a power relationship between 2 categories of beings; one of them must be the master and the other one must be the slave. They come into conflict so that it can be determined which one will be the most powerful. The final result of this is supposed to be a synthesis which combines elements of the two, and expresses them through the power of the master, or the winner of the argument. The dialectical form began to take on great importance to modern thinking during the enlightenment in the 17th century. It's development continued and it reached its peak in the 19th century, and has not changed much since then. At that time it was supposed that the dialectic was the most elavated form of thought and rational problem solving. Now, we know better, and we know that the dialectic can also have incredibly destructive results, but we are still dependent on the form for many different things. Political leaders, lawyers, and advertisers wouldn't have a leg to stand on without the dialectic. To go back to the earlier example I used regarding the conflict in the middle east, it is presumed that Christianity and the West are the masters, and superior to the Musilms and the East, who are the slaves. Eventually the West will be victorious over the East and there will be some sort of synthesizing of what remains of each. In the meantime, the dialectical tension is responisible for quite a bit of bloodshed, lots of made for tv movies, radio talkshows, internet blogs, and so on. That's the theory anyway.
