can it be to just give up? Having just been turned down for the umpteenth job I've just been onto the jobseekers website over here and there are no jobs. O zero none at all. It actually says 'there are 0 jobs to choose from'. It's probably just a glitch on the site (there were like 60.000 yesterday) but not five minutes after a rejection email I can't help thinking it's a sign that I am unemployable, undeserving of a job or any kind of halfway decent life with my own income.

If life is a bowl of cherries why do I get stuck with the pips?

Everyone feels just the way you do sooner or later. Just take one day at a time and make a positive decision to enjoy the spare time you have right now....believe me it wont last! How do I know?
A: no spelling errors in your question (you're already in the top ten percent for intellect on this website!)
B: sense of humour (putting yourself up for ridicule on a website like this is a tribute to good satire)
C: you actually can visualise a decent future for yourself (some people even lack this skill)

Cheer up. Life's a beach but better than the alternative!

A decent life? What would that be? I know if you went to California you could easily get a job as a farmworker. If you're a good worker, you don't make bad money at all.

Personally, I went from Veterinary (after college), to specialty retail management, then to the computer industry (college, round two) then into cooking.

Jobs are where you find them, obviously. I've had many careers in my life. I STILL don't know what I want to be when I 'grow up' and I'm now 37 years old. Not a bit ashamed of that, either. (Though I'm considering culinary school. Cooking is fun! Hard work, but fun!)

Go out and just find anything you can. You may like it.

You know what life is trying to tell you? To get out there and explore!

You know maybe that screen at the job centre is trying to tell you something, that the job you really want isn't on there, can you afford a book of stamps, if so get your CV sent off to the companies who will have the job your really want to do, why do any old job just because its on offer, go for what you want, the price of a first class stamp just might be the change to your life that you are looking for, go for it and the best of luck to you, have a fantastic new year and may your hopes, dreams and wishes come true for you in 2007.

I was in a similar position. I felt completely unemployable. But after many months of searching I got a fantastic job.

Are you getting to interview stage?

If so, think about your interview technique. Think about the qualities you want to convey.

Take a second to look at things from the interviewer's perspective - if they make the wrong decision, they could be letting in someone who'll cause problems in the workplace. They could get someone who can't do the job, or someone who can't get on with the other staff, or someone lazy and idle.

Worse, they could wind up with someone who'll steal from the company or assualt other staff or sexually harrass people.

And once you're employed, it can be difficult to get rid of someone.
It's a big risk to the company, and the individual interviewer will look bad if they recommend you and you turn out to be a racist cleptomaniac football hooligan.

Your job in interview is to come across as human, nice, able to get along with people, competent, reasonably independent, and trustworthy.

For me, it boiled down to adopting an attitude of feeling *confident* and *talkative*.
('Talkative' as a good communicator and able to chat and bond with people. Not a ceaseless gossip-monkey).

When you know you only need to convey a couple of qualities, you should find it easy to get into that kind of mental state - more so than you normally do anyway.

It's alright to contact your prior interviewers and ask why they rejected you.
Do so in a civilised, accepting, friendly way.
Don't be defensive or take it to personally - they're commenting on how you came across at the time, not who you are as a person.

If you're not sure how to improve, getting this kind of feedback will help a lot.

If you're not getting to interview stage:

Have someone reliable look over your cv.

I checked mine, and found that instead of GCSEs, I'd listed my GSCEs.
It had been there for months. After I'd first wrote it into the CV, I just glazed over it - every single time I'd read the thing.

People who screen applicants are usually going through hundreds of cvs, looking for any excuse to reject as many of them as possible.

Use good quality paper too. And white, not coloured.

I'd also suggest you read 'What Colour Is Your Parachute'.
It's an excellent book, and helped me a lot.

A lot will depend on what kind of job you're going for too. Think it over, consider how you need to present yourself and your skills.

Just hang in there. Those jobs weren't meant for you, Probably a mean boss. You don't say what you're going for, if there are not that many jobs, try an area around it. The unemployment office, they are pretty helpful with that stuff. Its called EDS. There should be one in your neighborhood.

Don't ever give up, and don't ever let anyone tell you you aren't good enough for anything. Keep trying, and things will work out.

If you have any cash, "The Pursuit of Happyness" (spelled wrong for a reason) is very inspirational for your situation exactly, and it's based on an absolutely true story.

~I don't believe anyone is trying to tell you anything. Maybe you're just being tested?
You feel down because you need a job and can't find one, it's easy to want to give up but you can't.
There are other places to look for work, aren't there?
Yet another reason we need to send illegal immigrants packing!
Hang in there girl, you'll find a job.~

You have to have a goal. Luck does not exist. God gives you a possibility. You can take it and work it. Find what you are good at and confidently pursue that one purpose untill you succeed! Than think back and see that the merrit is yours alone.
