He is delusional, believing she loves him. He rises to her apology, meaning he still has hope. There is no love beteween them, she knows it, he does not. They knew each other in the past briefly, but that didn't work out. He put more stock in the past than she did. He hopes beyond hope, whereas a wise man would know when to quit because it is causng him pain.

You're at a loss? So was Michael McDonald who wrote the song. Basically, I think he's saying a fool believes what he wants to believe no matter what the truth is or what the facts are. These lyrics are almost as lame as something Stevie Nicks would write.

NO..... the song talks about a man who has a girl whom he cannot find the right words to tell her what it takes to make her stay.

They're in a cafe or a restaurant of some kind. He speaks and she smiles out of sympathy.....

He, being the fool, doesn't see that the girl is actually walking out of his life... so he believes it really isn't happening..... She apologises that things arent what he would expect, she leaves him...... He just never could say what he wanted to say.... He is actually, her past.... that's why she's leaving....

Your sister,
Ginger

Looks like unrequited love to me - she's saying goodbye and he doesn't believe she'll go.

Yep. Unrequited love.

"She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice..."

Unrequited love is love that is not returned. I love her but she doesn't love me - the story of my life! lol.
