Hardware wise I think the PSP kicks ass, but people like the DS because it has certain games. The PSP plays movies, games, music, and you can surf the web on it. There are also "hidden" abilities that the PSP has, but I choose not to spoil the fun and have you find that out on your own. (one is butting whole movies on the memory stick)

If you just want it for gaming, then the DS is pretty good, and has some great games for a young mum that needs to be able to jump in and jump out. It's nice and colourful and has some interesting game titles, plus some great games to expand your mind.
If you want to have alot more versatility and more in-depth and for want of a better word, "grown-up" games, go the PSP. You can use it for movies on the run, as an MP3 player, as a storage device for pictures, plus you can show them on it, and the graphics fall just a hair short of Playstation 2. The games are pretty much what you get on PS2, if just a bit smaller in length, plus there is lots of little extra things you'll find you can do with it as you explore it more.
End of the day, it all depends what kind of experience you're after. And don't forget, the DS and its games are usually cheaper than PSP, a nice incentive.

Go with the DS. While the PSP has better graphics, it doesn't have as many good games. The DS has Nintendogs, Final Fantasy III..........I could go on and on about all the great games, plus you can play GBA games, and if you get the Lite, GB and GBC games.
