One of the fastest growing areas currently, is the use of comparative genomics for personalized medicine. The study of genetic markers that associate with side effects on drugs to determine with a genetic test which of the available drugs will be most suited to a particular individual.
Also identification of infectious microbes. Comparative genomics is being used to track specific strains or species of either bacteria or fungi to determine the actual cause of the infection so it can better be treated.
And as mentioned above, disease trends are being studied through comparative genomics.
The answer is that comparative genomics is extremely important in Biotechnology and Medicine, and will continue to be on of the largest and fastest growing areas.
