I just bought a PSP and found that the back of the battery cover (the side facing the battery) to be quite rough, with some weird marks on it, and I was wondering if it was normal, or should I get a new cover for it?

Get a bigger battery first thing.
The 1800 mAh that comes with it is good for about 2~3 hours.
The 2600 mAh one lasts for about 3~4 hours with me.
Make sure the new battery actually fits inside the battery well, some of them sit outside of it and don't stay on too well.
MadCatz makes a very good case that is all metal and protects it extremely well. MadCatz also makes a screen protector that converts to a palm grip and has a spare battery in it as well.
Power + Protection = Peace of mind.....
