My favourite romance authors are: Nora Roberts, Julie Garwood (mostly historical romance) and Christine Feehan (paranormal romance). Most of their books are pretty good.

I don't usually go for romance, but The Time Traveler's Wife, by Audrey Niffeneger is one of the best books I have ever read. It is not a standard romance book, which makes it even better.
Memoirs of a Geisha is another romance novel that is not a normal romance novel. It is fascinating and you won't be able to put it down.

I ditto the recommendation of "Time Traveler's Wife" (although parts of it are really, really sad)--I loved that book. Jennifer Crusie writes really funny romantic novels; Suzanne Brockman writes hot action/adventure romantic novels (like with Navy SEALS); Maggie Osborne writes good western romantic novels; Pam Morsi writes sweet and surprisingly realistic historical romance. I'm, uh, also very fond of the work of Evelyn Vaughn, who does modern day female Indiana Jones/DaVinci Code kind of stuff :-)

Any book written by Nora Roberts is a good romance. She has an excellent command of English and her words will paint pictures in your mind. I believe I own all of her books and I consider her my favorite author.

If you want something classic, well-written, and NOT cookie-cutter junk, read "A Farewell to Arms" by Earnest Hemingway. Beautiful.
