Working more and more to gain more and more material things that you don't even have time to enjoy because of your work hours (even if material goods could bring happiness) does seem pointless. Past a comfortable lifestyle, I think people have been caught up in a lie.

In the US, it was the pursuit of happiness, not money, that was supposed to be part of the American dream. There are some economists who want to include happiness levels in the productivity of a country.

A few years ago, Bangladesh scored highest in a worldwide survey of levels of happiness... despite the country's low ranking in gross domestic product per capita.

Peace

there is a saying which is something on the lines of that with certain people, they have more money than they have of sense. as for why those who try to earn more money, well, its down to a number of reasons. likewise, the belief that money does indeed buy happiness for them and that everything has a value attached to it. but you cannot put a price on human life itself. its too precious to sacrifice and you cannot exchange human life for money. i may be wrong, but in today's age, especially in the west we are living in a society where capitalism has taken over and moral standards have slipped further down the pecking order. there are people who just don't care for anything or anyone- other than their bank balances. and i agree with you, what's more important is the time we have left to enjoy life and with our friends and loved ones and live it to the full before we past away. you can earn money but you cannot certainly use it to buy life itself

Yep, it's all about security. Would you rather enjoy life now with no regards to the needs of tomorrow, or would you rather feel secure knowing that you have money stockpiled up?

Money is often needed to enjoy life; the two aren't mutually exclusive.

Besides, for some greedy people, money is joy.

People want to be noticed and want more and more. They are getting greedy. Some work to live and some live to work. Neither is good. It's all meaningless. You can't take your riches to Heaven anyways. Nor to Hell. So what's the point of working for nothing? For working for a temporary life? People are losing the point of what they have to do. Work the get enough money to help yourself. Now people think they can get happy with money.

I have often said that if I work the overtime that is available I have the money to do the things I want but not the time.
If I don't work the overtime I have the time to do the things I want but not the money.
Sadly it seems money is our security blanket and the method we use to measure our success.

after security is achieved, people continue to be greedy and hungry for money possibly because they have pushed away all their loved ones by never caring about anyone but themselves and their money. so rather than face that loss, they disguise it with more and more money, and buy things to take the place of the people with whom they once shared relationships and experiences.

I always sit and think of the mother and father that go out to work all day, spend no quality time with their kids or eachother, and expect to be happy in life. Live the moment, every second of it.

i think the drive to earn more is innate. it's human nature, i think, to wanna keep on going, keep on doing better than you were before. it's also a social-signaling sort of thing, and it gets us sexual partners, so you can see why it'd be part of human nature.

Chasing hapiness the only way they know how. The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself.
