The UK needs to avoid any future supply problems by diversifying suppliers and sources and only using Gazprom as a last resort. The recent connection to the Norwegian gas grid is a start and we need to be importing liquefied gas from Algeria etc. I would also beef up the take up of alternative energy resources by giving significant tax incentives for home users and cooperatives to set up wind turbines etc.

We do not have a problem with the gas supply here in UK. If you heard the news today, you'll know about the helicopter which crashed in Morcombe Bay with the loss of (I think) eight lives - gas workers, working on a gas platform in Morcombe Bay.
There is a plentiful supply of North sea gas plus gas coming on stream from the Celtic and Irish seas.
The countries most affected by the Russian price hike in gas are those, such as France and Germany, who do not have their own natural gas resources. UK is still gas and oil rich, for many more years yet.
So, why did Brit Gas and other supplies of household gas put up the price? Greed. Brit Gas will drop the price of gas next Spring - they have no choice, they've lost nearly half their customers to alternative suppliers.

It's like oil if you've got it you can hold other countries to ransom. Of course Putin is not to be trusted he's a politician like Bliar,Bush and the rest. Eventually we the Europeans are going to have to pay vastly more for our energy, it's just a fact of life.

I doubt it. It is only the old eastern block that is too dependent on Russia for energy. Even here in Finland, energy imports from Russia are at 30 %, a relatively low level.
It is clear that we do not trust the Russians (duh) as we decided against building a gas pipe from Russia to Finland.

Absolutely. Putin is a tyrant who is using energy where previous Russian leaders used tanks.
Hes dangerous, very dangerous - and sooner or later it will lead to more serious trouble.
