The first link is for inventory of cattle and calves, by state, for 2002. Note: http://www.nass.usda.gov/Census/Create_Census_US.jsp is a great link for putting together agricultural data.

The second page ranks states by size in Sq. miles.

From there, you can divide the # of cattle by the size of each state (copying to Excel or any other spreadsheet program will help you do this faster).
