Some rap is actually prose poetry in a way.
Beowulf was a prose story that is still called a form of poetry to this day.

i wager everyones allowed to love their personal forms of music. possibly your an 80's guy....possibly some human beings like Rap. You cant end them from having there personal opinion. Me , i love a mixture. somewhat rap each from time to time is sweet.

First of all, I hate the word retard because it's a stupid STEREOTYPE that makes the one using it ignorant...
Second of all, I am not very fond of this genre of music, but I have to disagree with you. They're not attempting poetry. They're attempting to send a message into this world. Maybe the way they send it, their type of music doesn't advantage them because their music is sometimes raw and harsh or violent, while the poetry contained by their message is the opposite. So I agree with you. I understand that this difference in the styles and their purposes annoys you. But it's not poetry. They are using music to send messages, and they do it in a poetic way. If they'd want poetry, they wouldn't be in music.

I hate rap, but I think "retard" is too strong.
Also, not all rap has really stupid lyrics--some of it might be good poetry if it were spoken aloud. It's the beat and the obnoxious delivery that makes it suck.

Hello... look at Bob Dylan, one could almost say he was the first white rapper. WHen you can figure out what he was saying.. he was very intelligent. Will Smith... would never say he was unintelligent.. great rapper (Very clean, i can play it in my classroom) and well not bad to look at.
Anyone who can get out there and show their talent... and be critiqued... and convince people they are talented... deserves a little respect, even if you disagree with the message.
Stereotyping is an ugly habit.
