Where you live would be helpful here. Sounds like maybe a fox. Did it have a bushy tail? Remember, there may be several different sub-species of a single type of animal. Take a trip to your local zoo and look at the indiginous animals section and maybe even talk to a zooligist. You may have stumbled on something that you and the family dog may want to keep your distance from.

Hummm, I am sure it wasn't a mink as they have short legs and long bodies. It sounds like you described a fox to me. It may have been hunting mice or just passing through. The Red Fox is the most common of all the Foxes:
[The "Tiny Url" will take you to a pic of a red Fox.]
"The Red Fox"
The red fox is by far the most common species of fox. It is 90 to 105 cm (36 to 42 in) long, not including the tail, weighs about 7 kg (about 15 lb), and is distinguished by black ears and feet and a white tip on the tail. The coat is usually some shade of rusty-red or reddish-brown, sprinkled with light-tipped hairs. The red fox ranges across Eurasia and North Africa and from northern Mexico to the Arctic. Within these vast zones diverse variations of the red fox have developed; those of the south are smaller and have lighter-colored coats, and those of the north are larger, with thicker and darker coats. The silver fox, valued for its black, frosted fur, is simply a variant of the red fox.

From your description it sounds like a ferret to me.
But surely you would recognise one of those.
Try and take a photo the next time you see it, take it along to your vets or post it on the net.
Someone will recognise it for sure.

Did it have eyes? If not, then it was a mole. It could be a opossum also.
