A modem and a Network adapter are two separate devices. Anyway, the procedure below works for both. Go to 'my computer', right click and select 'manage'. Select the 'device manager' option from the tree. Open the 'network adapters' or 'modem' branch ,and see if it appears there. If it doesn't, the network card cannot be detected by the machine, which may be due to a hardware problem. Most likely, it will appear as an uninstalled device. In that case you will need to install a new driver. If you have the disks that came with the modem or adapter, then install that software. If not, you will need to locate the drivers for the device on the internet, however you need to know the exact model of the modem / adapter first.

A Modem dosen't connect to a network Card

A modem Assuming its a broadband one Usually connects to a USB Port

A router usually connects to a network Card

You need software drivers for a modem, but not for a router

You can install a network card in your PC which are cheap and pretty straightforward to install
