I say Bye to my step daughter in France! Assuming movies reflect our culture, I would say that "Bye" is impersonal and only for those we don't really care about. If you are speaking to a loved one, you end with "Love you." If it's a long time friend, you might say "Take care," meaning "don't break your neck or kill yourself until I talk to you next time." Or, you might say, "See you later."
We've grown past monosyllabic conversation endings, except on the IM on computers.
