Ignoring empresses who were the consorts of emperors (such as Livia and Agrippina in the Roman Empire), here are three notable empresses who ruled in their own right,
Catherine the Great reigned as Empress of Russia from 1762 until her death in 1796.
Queen Victoria of England was made Empress of India in 1877 until she died in 1901.
Wu Zetian was declared emperor (empress) during the Tang Dynasty in China in 690 until she died in 725.
