In the USA we memorized it since elementary school days, but what does it really mean? Break it down for me?

Ex. "For the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming" = WHAT!?

Francis Scott Key wrote the song during a battle in Baltimore during the War of 1812. the lyrics are basically a description of that particuliar battle. The fact that the us won that battle is why our flag was still there and we are still the land of the free. The Ramparts were the banks of the the rivers and streams that kept on streaming as the soldiers defending them did not lose hold of their ground.(in other words just a colorful term for that).

Basically, some guy wrote the song while in jail [I believe], and it was during a war, and the flag survived the rockets & bombs.

Basic story: America is strong, or at least the guy thought.
