Not quite sure since much can be described as brain washing by an onlooker.
Brain washing is not a process of the mind. Development of the mind is a personal thing, what we want to learn, not to be confused with the obsessions held by other people.
I am trying not to print a huge boring page about the subject so I will try to keep it short.
What is wrong with brain washing you ask. A person has the right to live his/her life as is fitting. Once an obsessive individual/group uses knowledge for control of another, brain washing is the result. To believe in the words of another is brain washing.
Housing estate dwellers are prone to gutter sniping and gossip which creates a tusnami in a persons life, hence the brain washing of those individuals involved in the gossip trade. WE BELEIVE YOU==YOU DID YOU SAID ===YOU WENT.
to find out about a culture listen to the gossip traded. This is what the culture is about, their way of life, yet the finger points at another.
Brain washing can be heard when the individual gets stuck saying the same thing time and again. Usually what is said is insulting.

No, because the aim of science is not to discover the right as much as it is to eleminate what's wrong.
The scientific method is based on this and only this; determining all what is FALSE so that nothing but the TRUE remains.
This is why humanity have progrfessed such a great deal since it had discoevered the scientific method. For the nature of science is like the nature of a living thing . it grows, learns , develops and veloves. It changes and corrects its self . Science is a living thing that grows and eveloves.(as opposed to faith which never changes because it is always right! and therfore resembeles a dead thing, a rock).
A scientist is also different from a politican. For when a scientist proves that he had been wrong for twnety years, this means he had reached a new level of knowedge, it means he had finaly learned what is right and can finaly implement it in a new usefuyll technology. Some scisntists got prizes and actually changed the course of history by proving themselves or other scientists wrong. While on the other hand if a politican proves himself wrong that means his career is over :)

perhaps brain washing ia sefined as erasing old information and replacing with new, as opposed to 'updating' old information, so that the old is retained and can still be recalled but is classified as 'out od date'.
If one adds information as a layer upon the previous, then you can recall the previous and dismiss it as 'old' information.... i.e. Santa brings you presents, later updated as Family buy you presents. But you remember the original and it is updated with a layer of fresh information.
Not sure if this answers your questoin but it got me thinking. Hope it contributes something to your eventual knowledge, though.

gorgeousfluffpot is right. Even more so "brainwashing" implies deleting original knowledge and putting in false beliefs. This is what sects and some religions do
