If there is a Salvation Army Thrift Store near you, or a Goodwill Store, those are good places to look. The Salvation Army store near me sells paperbacks for $0.50 each, and since it is near a fairly affluent area of town is usually well stocked with recent bestsellers. Sometimes you'll pay $1.00 for a paperback there, but go back in a week and it'll be reduced if it is still there.

yard sales/ car boot sales, charity or thrift store, and Ebay are the best places. You can usually find a box full of used books by popular authors from Ebay for less than $5 (plus shipping of course!).
Also, my friends and I get together once a year and do a swap party. Basically, everyone brings everything from their house they don't want anymore (including books), and you get to pick whatever you like and take it home. Anything no one wants goes to charity. It's fun, and I pick up tons of books every year.

Check yard sales. Also, amazon's marketplace has those best seller books for dirt cheap. You can sometimes even get them for a penny or two. You just have to pay for shipping, which is somewhere in the realm of $2-$3 for media mail.

One place I don't think anyone else mentioned: libraries. Most libraries ( or Friends of the Library groups) sell paperbacks if they start looking too worn or if an overabundance of copies. Someplaces do this like once a month other places always have bins for sale.

the website.... www.paperbackswap.com has a wide selection of all kinds of books....you can post books you want to get rid of...which would gain you credits that you could use to pick out books. Or...you could pay under 2 or 3 dollars to pay for a credit that you could use to request a book from somewhere.
