what time of year especially??? because i have no idea

well its better to do it in the fall or winter dont do it in summer or spring it will kill it take up the bamboo and shake off all of the dirt and look at the roots there will be clumps and each clump will have a leader use a sharpe knife and cut the clumps so that each leader has some roots now you will loose some of them but it wont hurt it then replant or pot it make sure you get all of the air pockets out and water it good in the spring to help it get started back

I always was tought spring was the best time. DO NOT plant bamboo in your yard as decoration because it will spread like crazy, and is almost impossible to get rid of. Use it in containers and all will be happy.
