go to http://www.toytowngermany.com/forum/. There is a great community of expats who meet up in the Frankfurt area, which is only about 45 minutes from you. If you post that you are new to the area and looking for someone to hang out with, you will be sure to get a bunch of responses. There are also quite a few online from Heidelberg if you don't want to travel, but I don't know if they are as active as the Frankfurt bunch.
Edit: I found this thread talking about what to do for New year's, looks like a bunch of people are getting together at a cool place called Destino's. Tell everyone hi for me and that I miss them :( http://www.toytowngermany.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=53311

The fireworks are a large part of a German's celebration of the new year, no matter what part of Germany you are in.
The New Year's Eve celebrations in New York City, where I live now are so depressing, because you need boat loads of money just to go out and have a good time.
This year it is going to rain and I have no plans nor money. Gosh, I wish that I could be able to celebrate it in Germany! Go out to any bar in Heidelberg and you will find people willing to join you for a beer. Prost!

I'm from Heidelberg and I can suggest going into town, most bars are open, there's a beautiful firework over the river. Try the castle. Just go out and have fun!
You won't be bored once you are downtown!

I live next to Heidelberg. one year we were at the city center and the firework is extremly good. You have to go and find a place at 11 or at least half past. Go up to the castle or to the bridge next to Bismarckplatz, there you´ll have an overview. I wouldn´t go to any organized party just walk around the pedestrian zone and of course to the "Untere Strasse" next to the church. There will be a lot of people hanging out. Promise!

Just go hang out in the Fussgangerzone or Pedestrian zone. There will be parties at most of the bars.
DO NOT BRING FIREWORKS into that area of town. As with many of the old cities in Germany the police do not look kindly when shooting fireworks off in the old parts due to fear of fire.
Around 11Pm make you way up to the castle for a spectacular view of the fireworks all over the rest of the valley.
Have fun.

My friend is stationed in Heidelberg and told me that they have an awesome New Years not always boring as some people out here do it at home counting down. They go clubbing and get drunked...from what my friend told me so if ur a partying alcoholic then H-Berg is just for you!

The best place to see the fireworks is across the river from the castle. Go early to get a spot, take plenty to eat and drink, and dress warmly. The only bad thing about that place is no public bathrooms, but don't worry, there is plenty of dark areas to relive yourself.
Stay safe!
I will be there too.

I used to live in Manneim, which isn't far away.... On New Year's my friends and I would watch fireworks and take advantage of the ridiculously low drinking age.... Other than that I'm not sure what else there is to do there!
