Here's the situation:
I have cable internet connection hooked up to my pc. I just got a Nintendo Wii which has internet capabiblities. My friend gave me a wireless router and told me the ssid and wep key so that I could hook my Nintendo up to the internet.

Now the problem is, I'm a complete noob when it comes to networking.

Here is my what I think has to happen:
cable modem --> wireless router --> pc (connected by network cable) + nintendo (connected wirelessly)

Can somebody tell me step by step what I need to do so that my computer and Nintendo both have access to internet? How do I configure everything so that it works? (I have no idea what to do with the ssid and wep key)

I'm running Windows XP Pro. The router is from Hawking Technologies. When I connect the cable from the cable modem to my router, and then from my router to my pc, I lose my internet connection. I've tried to renew my ip but it doesn't connect. What did I do wrong?

Gonna assume you have a linksys or dlink router....

Unplug your cable modem from your computer.

Plug the cable modem wire into the WAN port (separate port) on the back of the router.

Plug your computer into one of the LAN ports on the router (1 thru 4)

Plug the Nintendo into one of the LAN ports on the router (1 thru 4)
Using the PC, bring up a command prompt and type :

ipconfig /release
ipconfig/renew

This will give you a DHCP address in order to configure the router and you are going to log into it.

If it is a linksys, The gateway address will be 192.168.1.1, if a dlink, it will be 192.168.0.1

Using a browser, type in the correct gateway address in the address box. The router web page will then give you a login box.

The username is admin
for dlink, no password is set,
for linksys, the password is password, or 1234 or admin.... experiment.

run the setup wizard. Configure standard way by taking default answers for DHCP, WAN, LAN etc. It will configure your cable modem and enable the wireless. It will ask you for the SSID name then if you want security , Choose WEP (I do not think Nintendo can use WPA, which is better)

Use a 128 bit wep key, this is 26 hex digits. Here is an example string....

111114444477777FFFFFAAAAA1

This wep key must be the same as the one entered into the Nintendo. Save all changes in the router and power it down.

Now shut off all equipment, power back on in this sequence...
Cable Modem
Router
PC
Nintendo.

Enjoy

note that there is a distinction between Disabling the SSID broadcast and closing down the wireless radios thoroughly. Disabling the SSID proclaims do not actual turn off the wireless. they basically give up the router from sending out beacons that publicize that the wireless is for sale (also standard as growing to be a closed community). to thoroughly close down the wireless you want to locate the alternative to disable the wireless. when you consider that each and each and every router is different, this function might want to be in a lot of places. frequently you would possibly want to locate it interior the stepped ahead wireless settings.

OK I happen to work for a cable ISP company's tech support dept and we get calls like this all day long. Now the first and most important thing that I suggest to customers who have this issue is first and foremost to make sure that they can get online without the router first on the PC.

Once you've made sure that you can get online going directly from the PC to the modem, the next thing is to just call up the router manufacturer and have them walk you through the setup. Once you're online without the router, just do a search for the router manufacturer and look for a "Contact Us" or "Technical support" link to find a num ber to call for support.
