Yesterday, when i started my 94 Cavalier it started making a loud squealing sound. I also experienced a loss of power steering. The noise is coming from the serpentine belt i believe. So i poured water on the belt and the squealing stopped for a short time but came back. However, last week i ran the car into a snowbank, it ran fine up untill now, so i have no clue if that has anything to do with the problem. It could be a misaligned pully on the serpentine belt, but im not sure at all. Any ideas on what could be the problem?

Get a new serpentine belt AND a new belt tensioner if it is stuck.

The loss of power steering seems to indicate perhaps one of the pulleys may be seizing causing the belt to not move freely, if it hasn't been changed in awhile replacing the belt is a good idea too.
Replacing the belt can sometimes be tricky on some of the Chevy models ask around of friends and family and see if any of them can refer you to a good mechanic they will be able to replace the belt as well as check to see if all the pulleys are operating correctly, if i remember right chevys have had problems with their alternators as well as power steering pumps.

Squeals are almost always caused by bad worn out belts. Don't bother using the water trick or belt dressing, because those are just temporary fixes, and won't last long. Spluge and spend the $25 and get a new serp belt. The car is now 12 years old. They don't last forever you know!
