After the allies liberated Paris a new French government was quickly established. The new French government was recognized as legitimate by the allies. This government declared war on Germany and issued arrest warrents for all Vichy collaberators. After the fall of Germany in 1945, these warrents were carried out, members of the VIchy government and the French Gestapo (who hadn't fled) were arrested and put on trial. Several of them were later executed.

Marshall Petain, who led the Vichy regime was sentenced to death as well; but later had his sentence commuted because of his accomplishments during WW I. Several others were either sentenced to death or long prison terms.

Trials for those who evaded capture continue. The last person convicted was Paul Touvier, in 1994.
