It's your money. And your priorities. If it's a choice between feeding the kids or buying a new exhaust just to get "that sound", well....the answer should be obvious.....let the kids starve! lol

It is not normally real hard to do exhaust work depending on what he wants done. He could do it himself or possibly find a friend with tools and have it done. I do everything in my garage, I have made all kinds of custom exhausts with fairly cheap tools and no car lift. I normally just spend a few bucks on some stainless steel piping. If he has no way to do it, then he could go with a cheaper set up. Running no or high-flow mufflers would help, and be fairly cheap, also gutting out the cat is a good idea if you can find someone to do it. You do have to be careful if you have a newer car because it well have a 02 sensor after the cat to make sure it is doing its job. Normally this well just cause the "check engine" light to stay on. This is probably the cheapest and easiest way to do an exhaust and get a good sound, there normally is not much reason for buying a total exhaust system if that is what he was planning on. Especially if he does not remove the cat, it becomes almost pointless. Well I would suggest having him look for a cheap alternatives that would probably produce the same results with no or very little money. Good luck.

A performance exhaust is NOT a waste! And they aren't that expensive. What else do you have in mind for the money? Is it so important that it can't wait? Then yeah... he should wait otherwise get the exhaust and let him be happy.

Exhaust can be easy and cheap to sound good. Just get a performance muffler, thats all. I put a Flowmaster and a chrome tip on my Durnago and it sound great. So many people want to replace all the peipe, as long as they are not rusted out they are fine. just get a muffler, thats all.

Damn, and I'm still trying to figure out what a ute is...

Money could be used for anything else, even an emergency savings account.
