Where did you see the statistic that Afghan heroin was at record levels?

I know heroin is at an all time high right now (if you're a dealer of strictly heroin, you're not making much supposedly right now.)

But I heard on the radio the other day that, in the genious of the military, here's what is going on:

The troops in Afghanistan are destroying the Poppy fields. Thus, there is now a shortage of morphine. It's true. Hospitals in the states, in war zones, there's a morphine shortage right now--that's a fact.

So, I dunno.

I actually think there isn't much Opium as of late in Afghanistan.

I'll shut up now hah.

Defeating the Taliban and poppy eradication are two different things. When their poppy fields are destroyed the men often join the Taliban. So in some areas the poppy fields are ignored. In return NATO expects cooperation from the locals. The fact is, an insurgency can't be defeated by force alone, so turning a blind eye to opium production is part of "winning hearts and minds". What's good for the war on terrorism is bad for the war on drugs.

Is the US military supposed to be clamping down on heroin? It created safe havens for drug smuggling in the Balkans.
