There are some things that I simply don't want to tell people, either because I expect they will respond negatively to the information I might tell them or perhaps because I am embarrassed about something.
There would be a rather interesting problem we would encounter, though, if we did not keep some secrets from each other. For example, do you always want people to know exactly what you are thinking at a specific moment in time? Sometimes, its neither practical to disclose that nor safe to do so.
A robber holds up a gun to me and demands my wallet. Should I tell the robber that I think the robber is a bastard, or should I try to defend myself against the assault, or should I hand over the wallet? If I tell the robber that I think the robber is a bastard, I could very easily wind up dead. Making somebody with a gun pointing at you angry is probably not the best way to defuse a situation. :-)
Also, by keeping secrets, we can practice the art of deception, which has many practical purposes. Making people think we know things we don't, or making people think we don't know things that we do can be very useful for our own personal social survival. A good diplomat does not get to be a diplomat by disclosing a wide variety of state secrets, after all.

EVERYONE has secrets....... absolutely everyone shields something they know from someone they know.
We humans are afraid of practically everything around us. One of the greatest fears that humans have is the fear of rejection.
We keep secrets for a lot of reasons, and some are not that bad.
To keep a secret when the issue is not resolved shields others from undue confusion. To keep a secret until the proper person can 'come clean' and tell the other person what has happened is courtesy. To keep a secret when someones life depends on the secrecy is an obvious answer.
Some keep the secret however because they are afraid of the rejection of others if it comes out into the open.

because we care too much about what others may think of us if they knew all our ...secrets...
